Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure announced by SEGA

We’re pleased to announce Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure, exclusively for Nintendo 3DS. In Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure, players are immersed in the mysterious rhythmic adventure in the city of Paris, recreated in stunning 3D vision on Nintendo’s new handheld console. Pump up the tempo in early 2012 with the most mysterious musical adventure to hit the Nintendo 3DS yet.

“Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure blends rhythm, puzzles and a compelling story set in one of the world’s most exciting cities in a way that has never been seen before,” says Gary Knight, Senior Vice President of Marketing at SEGA Europe and SEGA of America. “This unique blend makes creative use of the Nintendo 3DS’ technology, offering an engaging, challenging and most importantly fun experience throughout.”

Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure sees players enter the secret life of Raphael, infamous among Parisians as an honorable thief for stealing famous works of art, only to return it days later. Dive into Raphael’s world and help him find the Wristlet of Tiamat to unmask the mystery behind his father’s disappearance. While unraveling the truth, players will encounter an assortment of different rhythm challenges to master. Tap the screen, swipe the stylus and control the gyro to the beat of the music to maneuver Raphael through the unique streets of Paris, brought to life by stylish animations and vibrant 3D maps and landscapes.

Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure offers a unique enjoyable single player experience, as well as toe-tapping multiplayer and uses StreetPass. Unearth the clues hidden behind treasures scattered around Paris, call on your sense of rhythm and use all your puzzle solving skills to help Raphael get to the bottom of the mystery.

Fatal Frame AR spin-off “Shinrei Shashin” (Spirit Photo) headed to 3DS

The staff behind Fatal Frame is working on a Fatal Frame spinoff of sorts for 3DS, Famitsu reveals this week. The new game is titled Shinrei Shashin, or “Spirit Photo.”

With a name like that, you might suspect that the game makes heavy use of the 3DS camera. This is the case — except you’re apparently taking pictures of ghosts.

The game comes bundled with an item called “AR Notebook.” Based off the summary at Famitsu’s report at the Sinobi blog, it’s not clear what this item is exactly, but it is used heavily in the game.

Famitsu lists the following modes of play:

AR Story: Zero: Purple Diary
Working with a girl whom you brought out into the real world, you attempt to solve the mystery behind the cursed Purple Diary, represented by the AR Notebook item. (“Zero” is the Japanese name for the Fatal Frame series.)
Horror Notebook
A collection of mini games that use the AR Notebook item
Ghost Camera
A free photo mode where you take your “spirit picture” and pit it against other spirits (the faces of other people).

Famitsu lists the release time frame for Shinrei Shashin as TBA. Sinobi did not provide the game’s publisher.

It certainly sounds interesting. Although I have yet to become a fan of AR, I bet this might help me move into the right direction. Glad I got my Japanese 3DS already. Look forward to hearing more news soon.

I got Virus Shooter XX

I got some shooter title that came out for the 3DS in Japan back in early March today. It’s called Virus Shooter XX, and it plays much like Face Raiders on the system. I don’t know Japanese but all I keep doing is going through the stages and shooting all the viruses. I guess I’ll figure out the game over time. Thanks to NCSX for getting it to me so quickly, I think I’ll use them now on in the future for my import games. (Senran Kagura is the next JP 3DS game I’ll be getting in a month)

Rhythm Phantom Thief R footage

SEGA’s upcoming Rhythm/Adventure game that plays like Layton and includes rhythm gaming is set to release in Japan sometime this year. This first footage reminds me a bit of the IDOLM@STER series of games and also of Rhythm Heaven. It’ll be interesting to learn more about this game soon enough.

Beyond the Labyrinth first trailer

Beyond the Labyrinth finally has a game trailer starring a clumsy girl who we have no name for at the moment. The game is set to make its playable debut at Tokyo Game Show in Japan next month. We’ll be sure to bring you more details on this adventure game for the 3DS.

I have been really interested in this game since it was first revealed (even with the bullshots). I’m sure it will look much better with the 3D turned on though.
