PSN store will NOT be up tomorrow

Contrary to rumors the PSN store will not be up tomorrow but instead by the end of May. Details can be found here.

This kinda sucks. I don’t really play games online on the PS3 so the thing I’m looking forward to most is the store coming back up.

Sony announces PSP Remaster series for PS3

Sony today revealed that they are planning to bring hit PSP titles and release them on PS3 with remastered visuals in HD.

Sony will be bringing classic PlayStation Portable titles to PlayStation 3 as part of a new PSP Remaster lineup. The company announced the series today along with its first major release.

PSP Remaster offers PSP titles remastered for play on the PS3. The games are spruced up with full HD visuals, compatibility with Dual Shock 3, PS3 exclusive content, 3D support, and other features.

The PSP and PS3 versions of the game also share save data. Sony says that this could allow you to play a game on the PSP while on the go, then continue playing when you return home.

The PS3 versions are also compatible with Sony’s Ad Hoc Party for PlayStation Portable service for network play. This free PS3 app normally allows local play PSP titles to use the PS3 as a proxy for true online play.

The series will kick off first in Japan through sales of Blu-ray Disc titles, Sony said. The wording of Sony’s statement suggests that the series will also be released internationally and will also see some games offered in download form. The press release did not explicitly mention these areas, though.

For the series’ first title, Sony has a biggie. As detailed earlier today, Capcom will release a PS3 version of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd under the name Monster Hunter Portable HD. The 4.5 million selling PSP title will feature 3D support, HD visuals and shared save files with the PSP, and will see release this summer.

Well that’s pretty interesting to hear. I hope this isn’t in place of Sony releasing any new PS3 games this year because delays suck.

I myself will probably pickup Wipeout HD+Fury and inFAMOUS as people keep telling me it’s one of the best games on PS3. I don’t have a PSP so that is definitely out. But it is nice to get a bonus, and I was expecting that we will so this is great.

Wada Explains Square-Enix Development Issues

This does not sound good for Square-Enix, it sounds like there is major issues amongst their development groups and with information not being passed along, the issue could be a lot deeper than anyone could anticipate.

I am a big Square-Enix fan myself, so hearing this is disheartening and I hope they can overcome whatever is going on internally and get back to the same level of quality they once were at.

Speaking at an investor’s briefing on the 13th (via Nikkei), Wada explained that of the 12 billion loss, about 4.5 billion came from such things as Final Fantasy XIV’s reworking and the cancelation of multiple titles. Most of the 4.5 billion was related to domestic development, he said.

“Our game development has become weaker than expected,” admitted Wada. “Revamping it will take one or two years.”

Wada attributed the poor state of development to weak communication. Creative leads did not pass on his opinion to their subordinates. Additionally, there was trouble with division of labor amongst technical staff, who were protective and would fulfill only their own roles.

To reverse Square Enix’s fiscal fortunes, Wada hopes to give a major push to social networking games and apps for high powered cell phones. However, he is unsure if developers who’ve worked on package games can work in these areas, so he’s hoping to make use of external developers. However, he’s not considering an acquisition.

This past year, internet-related products brought in profits of 1.5 billion yen for Square Enix. The goal is to multiply this during the current fiscal year, said Wada. Square Enix is also looking into possibly creating a billing platform.

One major point from the presentation materials PDF Square Enix released on Friday was mention of a plan to double the company’s major brands to around 10 or so. It looks like the PDF was not referring to this year. While development on these new brands is progressing, Wada believes it will take 3 to 5 years.
